Angelica, in polish called dzięgiel or arcydzięgiel, was called the “angel herb” for a reason. This tincture helps with almost all problems with the digestive system. It has been used for centuries to help with indigestion, flatulence and overeating. It is also effective in helping with coughing. Angelica roots are also used in cases of respiratory problems.
How to make angelica tincture? You will need 8 oz (240 g) of chopped root, a teaspoon of grated orange peel, a few grains of cardamom, 1 qt (3l) of 45% vodka. Put all the ingredients of the tincture into an airtight jar, pour vodka, cover tightly, leave warm for 8-10 days, then filter, pour into dark glass bottles and leave for 4-5 months to mature.

Angelica tincture uses, what is it good for
Angelica tincture supports digestion by increasing the secretion of gastric juice and other digestive juices, accelerates and improves intestinal peristalsis, which has a relaxing effect in constipation, and also helps to remove gas and flatulence. Angelica tincture also relieves nausea.
Angelica tincture benefits
Angelica tincture is used for:
- heartburn (dyspepsia),
- intestinal gas (flatulence),
- loss of appetite (anorexia),
- overnight urination (nocturia),
- circulation problems,
- “runny nose” (respiratory catarrh),
- nervousness and anxiety,
- and trouble sleeping (insomnia).
Angelica tincture dosage
Most sources suggest using angelica tincture after eating, take 20-30 drops on sugar or diluted with water, 2-3 times a day.
Angelica tincture recipes
To make basic angelica tincture with dried herb you will need approx. 4 oz (120g) of shredded angelica root and 8 fl oz (240 ml) of spirit 70%. Pour the angelica with spirit and set aside for 2 weeks. After this time, the tincture must be strained and poured into a dark glass bottle.
When using fresh angelica root for tincture take approx. 4 oz (120g) of angelica root, 32 fl oz (1l) of spirit, 32 fl oz (1l) of water, 1 lb (480g) of sugar, piece of cinnamon and nutmeg. Thoroughly wash the angelica root and cut into small pieces. Throw it into an airtight jar and then pour alcohol diluted with 16 fl oz (0.5l) of water. We leave it tightly closed for two weeks, after that time, add cinnamon and 1/2 of nutmeg, leave for 1 week. The third step is to filter the obtained tincture and combine it with sugar syrup. We slightly heat up 16 fl oz (0.5l) of water and dissolve 1 lb (480g) of sugar in it. The combined liquids (alcohol and syrup) should be sealed in the jar again and left for 3 weeks. The last step in making angelica tincture is filtering it and pouring it into bottles. We leave it tightly closed in a cool place for the next 3 months.
Angelica tincture recipe without alcohol
Alcohol tinctures are probably the most potent way to get healing and balancing benefits of herbs for our use.
But if you can’t or don’t want to consume alcohol, or you should not give it to kids, as a substitute you can make a glycerin-based, alcohol-free herbal extract, also called an herbal glycerite. Such extract is not as strong or long-lasting as alcohol tinctures, but it takes only up to 3 days to make it.
Recipe to prepare angelica glycerite without alcohol: put herbs in a jar about 1/2 way, fill to the top with glycerine. Cover and put in a slow cooker (or Instant Pot with a slow cooker feature) that’s lined with a towel and filled with water — run on low for 3 days. After that remove and strain, keep in a dry and cool place in dark glass bottles.
Angelica tincture contraindications and side effects
If you take angelica tincture, wear sunblock outside, especially if you are light-skinned as angelica might make your skin more sensitive to sunlight.
Angelica tincture may not be safe when taken by during pregnancy – it’s suggested that angelica can cause uterine contractions and this could threaten the pregnancy.
What type of alcohol is used for angelica tincture?
Most spirits used for drinking will work, but vodka or other grain alcohols that are at least 40% alcohol by volume work best. When using dried angelica, your best bet is to stick to an 80 or 90-proof alcohol, as it does not have a lot of juices left, and it is best for extracting any water that’s left in the fruit out of it.
How long does angelica tincture last?
When stored in a cool, dry place, angelica tincture lasts at least three years, if not longer. If you use dark bottles, it will last longer because the light will not damage it. If your area is humid or hot several months out of the year, try storing it in the refrigerator during the hot and humid season.
